Chapter 10
âHappy birthday!â
I sat up in bed. It was morning? I felt like Iâd just lain down. Weekend traffic at the restaurant had definitely picked up, which was great for tips, but had made for long evenings for the past two nights. I rubbed my eyes and watched as Tadhg and Davie came into my bedroom. âHi,â I said, and yawned. âThank you.â
âHappy birthday, Eimear,â my brother said again. He sat down on the edge of my bed and Davie nudged his back. âWhat?â he asked her, then nodded. He leaned forward and hugged me.
âWhat?â I echoed. âOh, thank you!â When was the last time weâd hugged without me grabbing him first? I beamed and put my arms around him, letting my head rest on my brotherâs shoulder. I had a slight memory of that when I was a kid, maybe that he had carried me? I closed my eyes and loved it.
Tadhg squeezed me briefly and then let go. âWeâre going out on the boat today,â he reminded me.
âThatâs right!â I agreed. This was already a wonderful birthday, and there was even more to look forward to. âAnd then, Griffin said that we can go to his grandmaâs farm.â Iâd been pressuring him to let me see his sculptures there, the ones out in the goat pasture. If I was honest, I wanted to meet his grandma, too. She sounded funny from what heâd said about her, and I was interested in his family. I was interested in him in general, everything about him.
Davie and Aria thought the signs were pointing toward more than friendship. âHe came to drop off lunch for you, Eimear! He must really like you,â Aria had squealed when Griffin had left the law office on Friday. Heâd shown up, said hello again to Brian and introduced himself to her and Gary, and left me with a burrito, a bag of carrots still dusty with the dirt from his garden, a soft brush of his finger across my cheek, and a promise to see me later.
âOh, heâs so handsome,â sheâd continued, at which point Brian had piped up to tell us both that it wasnât appropriate to have visitors at work. Never mind that his own wife had come that morning to give him a clean shirt since heâd spilled coffee on himself in the car. Stephanie had stalked through the office, given me a very dirty look which I didnât understand, and kissed Brian right on the mouth. Iâd been afraid that I might get another glimpse of the oatmeal Iâd eaten for breakfast at that sight and turned to Aria for her thoughts, but sheâd already escaped to the ladiesâ room.
âHe wants to hit that,â Davie had said on Saturday, and pointed at myâsheâd pointed right between my thighs, the upper part. Because Griffin had come to pick me up to take me to the restaurant for my shift the night before, and heâd been waiting for me in the parking lot at the end of it, noting that he was there for safety and gas savings reasons.
